Heading north from Colmar towards Ribeauville and Riquewihr and other picturesque medieval villages located between the Vosges and Alsace Plain on the Alsace Wine Route. Filled with a profusion of flowers in the summer, and authentic charm during the Christmas market, the area is full of some of the best winemakers in the region and we will visit several of them.

Ribeauville is located at the foot of the ruins of the Three Castles of the Lords of Ribeaupierreon. It's main street is lined with 15th to 18th century buildings Renaissance style decorated squares. The surrounding vineyards have been in existence since the Middle Ages and one of the most famous wine producers in the world.

Colmar is recognized as the wine capital of the region and if convenient to get to, the best starting point for a wine tour head either north toward Strasbourg or south. Maison des Têtes (House of Heads) is a Renaissance town house built in 1609 in the center of Colmar houses the Colmar wine exchange, which was founded in 1898.

A Colmar Treasure of precious decorative objects (now in the Cluny museum in Paris), hidden by Jews during the Black Death in 1348, was discovered here in 1863. from that time was discovered hidden in the wall of a confectioner's shop. For those interested in religious art then see the Issenheim Altarpiece in the Unterlinden Museum located in a 13th century convent with a contemporary art extension.

Located in Voegtlinshoffen, Cattin is the largest family owned and operated winery in Alsace since 1720. They own more than 65 hectares in each AOC around Voegtlinshoffen, Steinbach and Colmar, including the Grand Cru Hatschbourg vineyard . The Hatschbourg Grand Cru Riesling 2018 was awarded 92 points by Wine Enthusiast. Their Steinbach winery, built in 2007 is dedicated to the production of their renowned sparkling wines; namely Crémants, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. They also age their top wines french oak barrels. Staying forward thinking Cattin has opened of a new cellar and wine bar with a panoramic view worth a stop.

Wolfberger is a major producer in the Alsace wine landscape and around the world with 1200 ha (around 3 acres) of vineyards, more than 10% of the Alsatian vineyards, and 13,000 parcels of land. 450 member winegrowers and produce 13 million bottles of Alsace wine, Grands Crus, specialities and exclusivities, crémants, and eaux-de-vie. Pinot Blanc known in Alsace since the 16th century covers 22% of the Wolfberger vineyards and is the second most important variety after Riesling. The grapes are gathered in vineyards situated above Eguisheim and in surrounding villages. The resident oenologist at Wolfberger is Bertrand Praz formerly worked at Champagne Mumm.
