Strasbourg is situated at the eastern border of France with Germany delineated by the Rhine river. The architecture and decorations bear witness to the political, social and cultural change, with the town’s status changing from a free city of the Holy Roman Empire to a free city of the Kingdom of France. Between 362 and 1262, Strasbourg was governed by the bishops of Strasbourg before a rebellion created a free imperial city. It became French in 1681, after the conquest of Alsace by Louis XIV. In 1871, after the Franco-Prussian War, the city became German once more and rebuilt as a Neue Stadt, until 1918 when it reverted to France then back to German control in 1940 and back again to France after WWII.

Andlau is famous for its imposing abbey, its three great Riesling vintages – Moenchberg, Kastelberg and Wiebelsber. On a hillside near Obernai and Mont Saint Odile, Mittelbergheim contrasts sharply with its neighbours. Here there is no half-timbering, but elegant Renaissance houses in pink stone alongside a carefully maintained heritage. The oil mill and presses remind visitors of theirwine tradition, as does the ‘Weinschlagbuh’, a registered manuscript which has chronicled the vineyards and price of wine since 1456. Ancient walls still intact, adorable winding streets lined with old flowery houses, and legends of witchcraft, Bergheim goes back to a bucolic wine trail seemingly untouched by time. The medieval town of Kaysersberg is guarded by the ruins of the Chateau de Schlossberg, which high above, guards the old Roman road linking the Alsace to Lorraine and the road of Santiago de Compostela.

Maison Trimbach dates back to 1626 and has built a solid reputation for excellence worldwide, is one of the highlights of this wine tour. 12 generations of winemakers have made Maison Trimbach famous for its aromatic grape varieties, with a true passion for Riesling, which they believe to be the finest white wine in the world due to its fruitiness, finesse, and elegance. Zellenberg is another gem of the wine country, known for two local Grands Crus, Froehn and Schoenenbourg, while Kaysersberg, voted the favorite village of the French in 2017, is home to the local Grand Cru, Rosacker.
